The Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars are set to start off Week 14 of the 2018 NFL season with a Thursday Night Football showdown. Tennessee’s hopes of staying alive in the AFC playoff hunt rest on besting the AFC South rival Jaguars. This 6-6 Titans squad is currently behind the Colts and division-leading Texans, but has a chance to make up some ground if it can get the job done in primetime. Jacksonville is just 4-8 and pretty much out of the running at this juncture, but could play spoiler with a road upset this evening.
Oddsmakers believe the Titans will take care of business at Nissan Stadium, installing the squad as a five-point favorite for this Week 14 clash. It’s not surprising considering how well Tennessee has matched up with this foe in recent seasons, winning three straight and five of the last six dating back to 2015. Jacksonville dropped the first game of the 2018 series in September, falling 9-6 despite its status as 10-point home chalk. The books expect another low-scoring game this time around, setting the over/under at a mere 37.5 points, one of the lowest totals of the campaign.
With the Titans boasting a string of wins under their belt and being a confident favorite for this Thursday Night Football contest, it remains to be seen if they will get caught looking past their upcoming opponent on a short week. The Jags are still dangerous, especially on the defensive end of the football, as they possess a top-five unit in terms of yardage and points allowed this season. The Titans also can’t afford to risk getting into a tiebreaker for the Wild Card spot, as they would drop behind the Dolphins, Colts and Broncos should they finish with the same record. It’s a must-win game for the program, even if it doesn’t appear to be one at first glance.
Unfortunately low-scoring, defensive-minded affairs don’t make for exciting viewing, especially when they are nationally televised. Fans looking to get a bit more invested in this clash can ramp up the stakes of Thursday Night Football by placing a wager down on the outcome. Titans head coach Mike Vrabel gave his comments on what this AFC South rivalry means for his organization and what he expects to see tonight (via TitansOnline.com):
This is a division game. These division games are tough. They’re close. Everybody knows the personnel. I wouldn’t imagine that we’d see a lot of different stuff from them. (Leonard) Fournette is coming back. I would imagine a heavy dose of run. They’re physical. Their defense is physical. So, it’s something that we think is going to help us win that game is just trying to play a physical football game.

First N Goal noted that the Titans have been a strong home play in 2018, while the Jaguars have been abysmal against the spread on the road:
Fast facts: The #Titans are 4-1 SU at home, while the Jaguars are 1-4 SU on the road. TENN is 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings with JAX. The #Jaguars 6-0 victory over INDY was their first win in 8 weeks. The Titans beat the Jaguars 9-6 in Jacksonville on 9/23/18. #NFLPicks

Jacksonville head coach Doug Marrone revealed the unique challenges of playing on a short week (via Jaguars.com):
I think our focus is really on this next game. The goal is to win, so every time you win, it’s important. I think their focus is more just, this is the next game. Not really looking ahead or trying to get them bundled up together. I just think that it’s let’s just focus on this week and let’s go. Especially this week because it is a little bit different. The practices are different, there’s more emphasis on the mental part of it than the physical part of it.

Titans defensive end Jurrell Casey doesn’t want to let Jacksonville move up the standings at his franchise’s expense (via APNews):
That’s something we can’t allow to happen. We want to keep them where they’re at — at the end of the division and leave them there. We got to make sure we take care of our part. At the end of the day, we can’t worry about them. We have to worry about ourselves because we ain’t played so hot this year ourselves.
